Proverbs 13:20
Welcome to another episode where I wanted to discuss about the concept of acting on discernment, through the Bible verse Proverbs 13:20.
You know, life was not made for us to go through alone. We are meant to be surrounded by a community which yields growth. However, not everyone gets placed in such community and often times, we may find ourselves in an environment that is filled with limitations. Such reason may be brought through our own self-infliction, but it is also possible for it to be caused by those around us who we believed were people who sought nothing but the best for us.
Now where we find ourselves in such environment or community of others, we may be quick to want to lean onto our own strength and find a way out. Whilst that’s all good and well, such strength may only hold us for a period of time until we become weak, feeling like there are no prospects of moving forward.
But we have God.
To know of God is one thing but to know Him- it’s a whole different avenue of blessings, wisdom, knowledge and understanding that we wouldn’t think is possible to acquire. God speaks to us in so many ways, guiding and protecting us onto the right path for our purpose. He does the exact same thing when picking out the people, community and environment we get placed in.
He does everything. He handles everything. All He asks of us is one thing, as outlined in verse 20:
PROVERBS 13:20 NKJV
“He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed."
Now this is one of my favourite Bible verses ever. It’s a Bible verse that we should all know, no matter the stage that we are at in life as it is important for all life stages.
Paraphrasing it, the company you keeps accompanies what companies you.
1. Who are you trying to be in life?
2. Where are you trying to be?
3. What are you trying to be?
4. How are you trying to be?
5. When will you start trying to become who you’re trying to be?
6. Why are you trying to become who you’re trying to be?
Now I’ve mentioned the six main question starters but there is one more that to me, is the most important.
Whose are you trying to be?
I know my answer and it’s God. I’m trying to be a Child of God. I already am one but I’m still trying for the fact that I seek to continuously deepen and develop my faith in ensuring that I live a life according to Jesus’s word and God’s image. So, in order to do that, I need to be in company with people and things that will help me to get to that level of whose I’m trying to be and at the same time, I’m helping them to reach that stage as well.
The who, what, where, when, why and how have got to be environments and people that live to see you win. Environments and people that help you grow. Environments and people that love you for you and want nothing but the best for you.
We’ve established that. Now going back to God, the alpha and omega, the head and not the tail, the way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper, light in the darkness God: He does not put you in situations or with people that He would not seek for you to be in or with, either, without having a plan to see you through, or knowing that this is a situation that you are to overcome to see the blessings that He has in store for you.
Why am I saying this? God works in plans.
Everything that you are going through is part of His plan. It may not make sense in the moment of time that you are living through it, but it is for a reason. Everything has a reason. There’s a reason why He’s put you in said environment. There’s a reason why He’s connected you with said people. He’s playing His part but are you playing yours? Are you sticking to the plan that He has shown you for your life or getting side-tracked? You got to be aware of what you’re doing in this life and who you’re moving with. It is never too late to turn back and get back on track. Be wise in your actions, in your socialising, in what you allow to get into your head. Don’t be foolish, don’t follow the crowd because the majority are doing so, don’t commit an act that will get you seats at the tables on Earth but will get your seat replaced in the Kingdom of Heaven.
What you keep accompanies what companies you.
Remember, Trust in the Lord, Love like the Lord and Walk with the Lord. TLW
